Reconnecting people with their surroundings

Manchester, Salford and Trafford have a wide variety of open spaces, some of which fail to meet the needs of the community.

Groundwork believes that open spaces – from disused landfill sites, to municipal parks, to back alleys and sites where demolition has taken place – all have the potential to be valuable resources for local communities in and around Manchester.

We help people develop new amenities ranging from community gardens and sports facilities on inner city housing estates to wildlife areas, community forestry, cycle and pathway construction, the development of major recreational facilities on former industrial land and the improvement of school grounds. Much of this work is aimed at young people and children, providing them with play and meeting areas.

We believe that in undertaking land regeneration projects it is vital that all sectors of the community are involved if the final result is to be sustainable and bring real positive change.

Groundwork Manchester, Salford & Trafford uses land regeneration projects – big and small – to deliver added benefits, including fostering community spirit, improving public health and delivering economic benefits through an improved neighbourhood image.

Here are just some examples of the type of work we do:

Alleyway Closures
Alleyways are perceived as a source of crime and fear of crime. To alleviate this, we have undertaken a widespread programme of alleyway closures at the communities’ request.

Transport Corridors
By accessing European structural funds we have been able to enhance public open spaces on Moston Lane and help strengthen its image as an attractive and vibrant shopping area.

River Valley Initiatives
We have used the area’s waterside assets to enhance the landscape and quality of life of residents.
